What is the “Sport Air Racing League”?

The Sport Air Racing League exists to promote open course air racing for experimental and production aircraft.

Course
  • Open course race of 100 – 500 nautical mile distance.
  • Open course means all racers fly the course once (1 lap) sequentially.
Flight Rules
  • All flying is done under FAR part 91, VFR.
Operation
  • Aircraft are staged into classes based upon engine size and aircraft type.
  • Starting positions are determined by maximum aircraft speed; fastest planes take off first.
  • 20-30 second delay between departures to minimize passing on the course.
  • Turns are monitored by judges to record aircraft course paths.
  • Planes are timed as they enter and exit the course.
  • Average course speed is determined by time over the known distance.
  • No prize money or compensation is awarded.
  • Entry fees are minimal and rarely recover the cost in hosting the rally.
  • Sport Air Racing League events are not for profit.
